En 1928, se convirtió en el primer puertorriqueño en jugar regularmente en las Ligas Negras Organizadas con los Cubanos de Nueva York en la Liga de Color del Este y segundo puertorriqueño en jugar en las Grandes Ligas.  Al año siguiente fue el primer puertorriqueño en jugar en la Liga Negra Americana.  Un jugador querido y respetado, en su mejor momento fue comparado con Frankie Frisch. Cuando comenzó la Liga Profesional de Puerto Rico en 1938, ya tenía 33 años, pero aun así se desempeñaba bien en una liga muy competitiva.  Reforzó a Guayama cuando estos ganaron el campeonato mundial de la Liga Semi Pro contra los Duncan Cemeteers en 1939. Dirigió dos veces al equipo de Ponce Leones (1938-39 y 1946-47). Exaltado al Pabellón de la Fama del Deporte Puertorriqueño en 1953 y al Salón de la Fama del Béisbol Profesional Puertorriqueño en 1992. Ganador del Premio Pedrin Zorrilla en el 2005.

In 1928, he became the first Puerto Rican to play regularly in the Organized Negro Leagues with the Cubans of New York in the Eastern Colored League and the second Puerto Rican to play in the Major Leagues. The following year he was the first Puerto Rican to play in the American Negro League. A beloved and respected player, in his prime he was compared to Frankie Frisch. When the Puerto Rican Professional League began in 1938, he was already 33 years old, but he was still performing well in a very competitive league. He bolstered Guayama when they won the Semi Pro League world championship against the Duncan Cementeers in 1939. He coached the Ponce Leones team twice (1938-39 and 1946-47). Inducted into the Puerto Rican Sports Hall of Fame in 1953 and the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992. Winner of the Pedrín Zorrilla Award in 2005.
