An exceptional power-hitting catcher and one of the premier offensive players in league history, he distinguished himself through his consistency, leadership, and ability to deliver in key moments. He led the league in slugging percentage (.521) and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player during the 1968–69 season.
He is one of only five players in league history to hit more than 100 career home runs, ranking third all-time with 105—tied with Héctor Villanueva—and remains the only catcher ever to reach that milestone. On November 17, 1975, he hit his 100th career home run against Caguas pitcher Miguel Cuéllar. He also owns the fifth-best home run-to-at-bat ratio in league history, averaging one home run every 22.06 at-bats (2,316 at-bats, 105 home runs).
He was behind the plate for Jim Palmer when the Hall of Fame pitcher threw a no-hitter against Mayagüez in Puerto Rico on December 22, 1968, and again when Palmer repeated the feat in the Major Leagues against Oakland on August 13, 1969. He also caught Fred Beene’s no-hitter against the Arecibo Wolves on January 17, 1970.
In 2013, he was selected as one of the 75 Greatest Players in the History of the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League, recognizing a career that established him among the finest catchers and power hitters ever to play Puerto Rican professional baseball.
