Primera estrella de nuestro béisbol profesional fue campeón bate en 1938-39 (.465) y 1939-40 (.383)…líder en hits en 1938-39 (79). 1939-40 (82) y 1940-41 (75)…líder en carreras empujadas en 1938-39 (48), 1939-40 (58) y 1940-41 (47)…es el único en ser líder en tres ocasiones en hits y carreras empujadas en el mismo año y de forma consecutiva…líder en triples en 1939-40 (8)…único nativo en batear .400+ en dos posiciones: como siore (1939-40) y primera base (1940-41)…uno de cuatro en batear dos veces .400+…uno de cinco en ganar dos títulos de bateo consecutivos…de por vida, está tercero en bateo (.325) y décimo en triples (31)…único jugador en empujar más carreras que juegos de su equipo en tres ocasiones: 1938-39 (48/39), 1939-40 (58/56) y 1940-41 (47/42)…posee el mejor ratio, entre los nativos, de carreras empujadas por turnos al bate con 5.30 (1,589/300)…uno de cinco en conectar seis imparables en un partido (vs. Santurce el 5/11/39)…junto a su hijo, Orlando, forma la única pareja paterno filial en ser líderes en carreras empujadas y uno de dos combinaciones de padre e hijo en ganar campeonatos de bateo (los otros son Santos y Roberto Alomar). Electo al Pabellón de la Fama del Deporte Puertorriqueño en1953. Exaltado al Salón de la Fama del Béisbol Profesional de Puerto Rico en 1991. En el 2013 fue seleccionado como uno de los mejores 75 jugadores de la Liga de Béisbol Profesional del Puerto Rico.
The first star of our professional baseball, he was batting champion in 1938-39 (.465) and 1939-40 (.383)… He led the league in hits in 1938-39 (79). 1939-40 (82) and 1940-41 (75)… leader in RBI in 1938-39 (48), 1939-40 (58) and 1940-41 (47)… He is the only one to lead three times in hits and RBIs in the same year and consecutively… leader in three-pointers in 1939-40 (8)… The only native to hit .400+ at two positions: as shortstop (1939-40) and first baseman (1940-41)… one of four to hit .400+ twice… one of five to win back-to-back batting titles… For his career, he is third in batting (.325) and tenth in triples (31)… the only player to drive in more runs than his team’s games on three occasions: 1938-39 (48/39), 1939-40 (58/56) and 1940-41 (47/42)… He has the best RBIs per at-bat ratio among the natives at 5.30 (1,589/300)… one of five to get six hits in a game (vs. Santurce on 5/11/39)… along with his son, Orlando, he forms the only father-son duo to lead the league in RBIs and one of two father-son combinations to win batting championships (the others being Santos and Roberto Alomar). Elected to the Puerto Rican Sports Hall of Fame in 1953. Inducted into the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. In 2013 he was selected as one of the best 75 players in the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League.
